What to check before you hire
- License status. It should be Active. Expired, suspended or revoked licenses are red flags.
- Insurance. It should be current through the end of your job. Ask for a certificate of insurance too.
- Bond. Where the state requires one, it protects you if the work isn't finished.
- Name match. The business on your contract should match the name on the license.
