How to check their insurance yourself

Connecticut doesn't publish contractor insurance, so check it directly before work starts:

  1. Ask for a certificate of insurance (COI). Any insured contractor can get one from their agent, usually the same day. Ask that it name you as the certificate holder.
  2. Check the details. The business name should match this listing, and the policy dates should cover your whole job. Look for general liability, plus workers' comp if they have employees.
  3. Call the insurer to confirm it's active. Use the insurance company's main phone number from its own website, not the number printed on the certificate, and give them the policy number.
